Now in its 41st year, the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service provided nearly 73,000 meals in 2003-2004, provided groceries to 3,111 households, and offered over 1,500 people a place to sleep through its Community House, HomeStart, and Community Services programs. Its modest staff and hundreds of volunteers served 4,166 households with housing, food and utility assistance and advocacy. Throughout the agency, volunteers worked slightly over 30,000 hours last fiscal year and interns (both paid and unpaid) worked almost 3,000 more.

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina serves 34 counties in North Carolina by providing food to more than 375,000 people at risk of hunger. In fiscal year 2003-2004, the Food Bank distributed 26.4 million pounds of food through more than 865 partner agencies. Soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, shelters, day care centers, and elderly nutrition programs all benefit from the work of the Food Bank.

The Durham Community Kitchen, a program of Urban Ministries of Durham, Inc., serves nearly 160,000 meals annually to as many as 2,500 different people who are homeless, hungry or otherwise in need. The Kitchen feeds all who come to its dining room in downtown Durham, at no cost, with no questions asked and no screening. The Kitchen relies on the assistance of hundreds of volunteers to serve three meals per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year. More than 95% of operating funds are received from private donors.
